If you require only "the best" in your accommodations then you are giving up the best skiing in the region. The ability to move from S-N and back in response to wind and sun is great and makes what could be considered a tough weather day into a lot of fun. We've skied here in temperatures like this weekend (-19 overnight and high winds) and had sunny days above freezing. The fact that half the slopes face south and half face north is a huge advantage also. Whitecap has more than enough variety for everyone. Our group has always consisted of adults and later added kids as they arrived so we always have mixed abilities and a mix of skiers and boarders. After a few years we all agreed that Whitecap was hands down the best skiing and have come here exclusively ever since. We started skiing in northern WI and MI in the early 1990s and used to stay remote and make day trips to ski at several locations. The downside used to be that the resort was on a downward trajectory of maintenance. The new owners are investing in major updates and improvements and it shows! If you haven't been here in a few years give it a try again because if you've been here before you know the varied terrain is the most fun in Wisconsin and Michigan. Please stay on the main trail and established side trails in order to protect the fragile high-elevation vegetation. Hikers can look to the south toward the Barren Chairback range, to the east toward Greenwood Pond, to the north to Katahdin and to the west toward Moosehead Lake. The summit area rewards hikers with incredible views in all directions. The hundreds of rock steps were installed using just hand tools and teamwork! The Maine Appalachian Trail Club's Maine Trail Crew put significant effort over many years to stabilize the trail in this section. After the shelter, the trail steepens significantly as it climbs through spruce-fir forest to the open summit area. A small cascade and pool near the shelter can offer hikers respite during their climb. The grade then moderates for the remaining mile to the Logan Brook shelter. The trail to Whitecap begins by traveling upward through hardwoods and over a series of ledges. It is easy to miss the crossing! Hikers should keep a look out for the footpath coming down the hill to their right and for the brown and white MATC signs just off the road. The Appalachian Trail crosses the Logan Brook Road 0.4 miles past the gate. ![]()
